Orally Administered Fulvestrant

Fulvestrant is a poorly water soluble estrogen receptor antagonist used to treat breast cancer by long-acting intramuscular depot injection. 5mL of the intramuscular injection is administered into each buttock. Emphascience is testing the feasibility of an orally administered fulvestrant capsule with adequate bioavailability and shelf-life that can be used instead of the intramuscular injection.

Stable Epinephrine (Adrenaline) Injection Without Sulfite

Epinephrine (adrenaline) injection is used to treat symptoms of anaphylactic shock. This injection is commonly stabilized by adding the excipient, sodium metabisulfite, which, in turn, can cause allergic reaction in some patients. Emphascience is developing a sterile epinephrine injection that does not contain sodium metabisulfite and, yet, is more stable and can be safely stored/used over longer periods of time.

Replacing or Reducing the Use of Opioids

Between 26 and 36 million people globally, and over 2 million people in the US abuse opiod pain killers. Common side effects of opioids include sedation, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, physical dependence, tolerance, and respiratory depression. Yet, the number of prescriptions for opioid analgesics increased from 43.8 million in 2000 to 89.2 million in 2010 and represents a significant portion of the >$18 billion US market for pain management. Working with competent partners equipped to handle controlled substances, Emphascience is overcoming the technical challenges of combining non-opioid pain killers or a non-opioid in combination with reduced dose of an opioid to offer better management of moderate to severe pain with reduced side effects.

Long-acting Serotonin Receptor Modulators

Serotonin or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptors of various subclasses are ubiquitous in our body and are being implicated in diverse biological processes including mood, blood glucose levels, nausea, and bowel irriation. Emphascience's long-acting depot intramuscular (IM) injections can be terminally sterilized and offer an excellent means to manage diseases with less frequent dosing. Prototype of a long acting IM injection of a selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist is being designed to treat both, acute and delayed-onset nausea, with a single injection.
